In the video, “Black Lives Matter Movement | global citizen” shows the importance of equality among race in the United States. It highlights the beginning views of blacks: slavery. During slavery blacks were considered ⅗a person and now the journey to make black individuals seen as 5/5. It all started when Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a police officer. Men and Women around the United States demanded justice for this young man, police often shoot before they think. They think someone is the fitting the description of someone their looking for could be any random person. The video related this concept of police shooting and killing without reason to the jury judge of execution. Since then the Black Lives Matter Movement has protested, marched and promoted their movement of equality. Social media has been one of the main highlights of the movement because it has helped individuals express their opinion, get the word spread of news and event information to come together as a community and demand equal rights. The advancement of technology has helped black individuals to record, post, and reflect on their experiences and make others aware of the inequality they’re experiencing. The point is that black lives matter too. They are people and should be treated as such. The only way the world can be great is if we work together and make it great.
I believe this topic is very important for social change because our society is always changing around us whether it be trends, laws, norms, etc. The movement is used by collective behavior, a crowd is formed to act on the goal of enforcing equal rights. Throughout history there has been many social movements for almost anything you can think of. It is very important way to get your point across and educate the public on the purpose of the movement. Just because the law at one point said something was wrong doesn’t mean it is actually true. This is very true for slavery, now it is time where police brutality is so normalized and nothing is being done about the problems created for white police officers who assume someone of the African American race is doing something wrong. I think television shows and movies do not help the movement because it always seems the black man is the one who robs the place or commits the crime. The stereotypes are being formed this way counteract what the movement is trying to prove.
