Race

The article I will be writing about is “Racial bias associated with disparities in disciplinary action across US schools”

The article basically talks about the higher rates of black student punishment rates across the U.S. Princeton University look at over 32 million students across the united states and tested 3,100/3,200 counties in the U.S. The two topics they studied were racial bias and disciplinary reports. They took a survey once every two years that requested disciplinary action that relates to race. There are five common forms of disciplinary action in-school arrest, expulsion, law enforcement referrals, in school suspension, out of school suspension. They found that 13.46% of black students got punished with outside of school suspension, whereas only 3.4% white students got the same punishment. Studies show the disciplinary actions can be challenging in the future and can lead to antisocial behavior and dropouts. Which can later lead to negative life outcomes and getting caught up in the criminal justice system. Throughout the United States this form of disciplinary action is most common in the North East. They found no significant data relating racial bias and disciplinary reports.

This chapter focused in on racism, discrimination and minority groups. The chart shows there are 13.3% black or african americans in the U.S. population in 2016. I think racism plays a role in this situation because of common stereotypes. I believe in the United States stereotypes of black individuals are a major problem in our society. It is the reason behind the Black Lives Matter movement. The fight for justice has not come anywhere near an end. White individuals get away with far more than they should, and black individuals receive more punishment for smaller crimes. In this article specifically it shows how discrimination takes place in our daily lives and often without realizing it, it can have negative effects on the victims. Mentally, it is challenging knowing they are growing up in a world where a determining factor of their punishment is their skin color. Racism is starting at such a young age, so they are exposed to negative stereotypes they have to live with. The school systems are following the criminal justice system and it’s sad to see.
